BALTORO 2 BOWLS
OVER F10!
Had my Baltoro 2 now for
over a year and it’s a fantastic tent. I’m particularly
impressed by some of the attention to detail, the robust construction
and materials used compared to some competition.
I find it quick to erect.
The continuous anti-snag sleeve is a nice touch. Velcro at pole
crossovers adds additional stability, as does a lower roof height,
yet it still gives a perfectly livable internal space.
It is super stable. Having
been stormbound on an uninhabited island of the Western Isles in
Force 8 Gales for 24 long hours I can vouch that it’s even
less troubled by severe wind than the almighty Quasar used the year
before (and that’s an impressive testimonial!)
Floor and ceiling
pockets give more storage space as well as great overhead lighting
options (and even improved radio reception if you stick your radio
in a ceiling pocket) when cooking and reading.
The door vents have proper
stiffeners avoiding annoying drips when cooking or on entering/exiting.
The inner doors store to side in mesh pockets means less mud and
less damage to them. No metal zipper pulls means no noise and a
quieter night’s sleep.
A separate stuff sack
for the fly means you can store it wet without soaking the inner
on multi-day trips and I like the compression straps for the main
stuff sack.
Instructions are waterproof
– I can’t tell you how many instruction sheets I’ve
destroyed in the field in the past!
All in all a thoroughly thoughtful bombproof design, that should
become a future classic, at an unbeatable price.

ON THE HILLS WITH
FORCE TEN
“Our aim is to further enhance our retail training program
by offering retail staff the opportunity to use our products in
the environment they were designed.” That was the thinking
behind Force Ten’s decision to organise their
first ever 2 day training course at the reputable National Training
Centre, Plas-y-Brenin in Snowdonia.
Led by 3 full-time dedicated Retail Trainers - Matt Graves, Hugh
Scott and Euan Cormack - and Product Specialist Bob Ewen, the training
course involved staff of Ultimate Outdoors, White Mountain, Outdoor
World, High Peak and Camperlands.
Plas-y-Brenin
is regarded as one of the UK’s leading outdoors training centres
catering for climbing, mountain leadership, walking, canoe, kayaking
and general adventure sport training. The course was designed to
take retail staff out of their every day store environment, to test
products from the Force Ten range and to experience
using the equipment in differing weather conditions and environments.
In addition to providing specialist product knowledge, the course
included team bonding exercises, tent pitching and hill walking.
Force Ten products used over the 2 days included
the Spindrift, Vortex, Baltoro tents and Zenith rucsac. Force
Ten Retail Trainer, Matt Graves was responsible for organising
the course: “This was a great opportunity for shop staff to
get out onto the hills and test our products in trying conditions,
but essentially to get to know the products better. For me experience
in the field is the best learning tool and with the mixture of hands-on
training, testing and product knowledge, I am confident each participant
will have taken something valuable away from these 2 days.”
The Feedback was very positive, including the following comments:
• “The best training event going!”
• “Good to use a wide range of products”
• “Found the two days to be a really good learning tool.
My knowledge has been improved a lot”

Baltoro Review
In
use, the Baltoro tents have been excellent. The group I went to
Bolivia with really rated them. From their point of view the big
plus point were:
Easy to pitch
Gear lofts for them to put a whole multitude of teenage paraphernalia
in
They gave the impression that it was a sunny morning every morning
(due to the orange colour of the inner!)
On
the basis that people might want to look beyond ease of pitching
and feel good factor orange walls, I thought I'd put a few more
observation down:
Mesh pole sleeves - to allow ventilation between the inner and outer.
Vango Force Ten has also cleverly reinforced the
top half of the sleeve to prevent poles snagging and ripping through
the mesh. Not only does itprotect the mesh, but the nylon reinforcement
has been sewn in 'proofed' side down so the pole ends slide through
a treat. Where the poles cross, the nylon protects the whole of
the mesh - perfect for our groups to use even if they are a bit
heavy-handed.
Reflective guy lines - these are pretty hard to trip over and help
you find the tent after a trip to the toilet.
Window - in the door allows a lot of light in to the tent.
Wired peak - above the top of the zip for ventilation.
Gear loft
Lots of see thru mesh stash pockets.
The inner is cut very precisely, allowing the poles to be very taut
in the sleeves. This allows the outer to be cranked down nice and
drum tight.
The door zips to the side and it has its own stuff pocket. This
prevents the door/mosi net from getting damaged and muddy by boots.
Bar tacked stitching - on all pitching points.
Separate stuff sacks - for inner and outer - Useful as allows the
tent to be split for carrying by two occupants.
Quick release buckles - allow the outer to be secured and adjusted
over the pole skeleton. This meant on expedition the ventilation
was good - in windy wet conditions the outer did not touch the inner.
The outer - also attaches at the pole junctions so it is pretty
easy to make sure the outer is in the correct position. Furthermore
the guy lines span out from these attachment point improving the
strength of the tent.
Bath tub groundsheet.
Colour coded pole sleeves and webbing straps

FORCE TEN TESTED TO THE
LIMITS DURING ALAN HINKES' WORLD RECORD CLIMB
June 2005
Britain
's leading mountaineer, Alan Hinkes, has become the first Briton
to climb all 14 of the world's 8000m plus peaks after successfully
reaching the summit of Kangchenjunga.
To
help complete his historic mountaineering challenge, Hinkes chose
to be kitted out with a range of tents, sleeping bags and other
essential equipment from leading outdoor performance brand Force
Ten. The kit consisted of Force Ten Vortex
and Spindrift tents that gave extreme performance
and protection throughout the severe conditions that Hinkes encountered,
Electron sleeping bags providing maximum warmth for winter mountaineering
and a Mountain Refuge shelter, an essential piece of kit for emergency
situations.
Alastair
Moodie, Marketing Director of Force Ten said : "Everyone within
Force Ten would like to congratulate Alan on his extraordinary achievement
of becoming the first Briton to complete all fourteen 8,000m peaks.
He fully deserves his place in the record books alongside all the
other Mountaineering legends. We are also delighted that Alan chose
to take Force Ten tents and sleeping bags on his arduous expedition
and this is once again proof that Force Ten are the leaders in high
performance tents and sleeping bags."
Towering
at 8,586m and standing as the third highest mountain in the world,
Kanchenjunga was defeated by Hinkes around 7pm on 30th May 2005
and represents the final peak of Hinkes ' Challenge 8000. Hinkes
stay in the Kanchenjunga base camp coincided with the 50th anniversary
of the first successful ascent of Kanchenjunga .
Force Ten also receives
many mentions in the press and is continuously being promoted throughout
the country.
FORCE
TEN STILL GOING STRONG!
May 2005
This year marks the 33rd
birthday of my Vango Force TenMk4 - and its still going strong!
Since purchase it has been used on many hundreds of nights in the
worst possible weather. I treat it now with the respect its age
requires but it still keeps me warm and dry and is likely to do
so for a few more years yet. Well done Vango!

I'm just writing to let
you know just how impressed I and my friends were with your F10
Assault and Baltoro tents. We have just returned from an independent
trip to Aconcagua.
What was immediately apparent
just how well thought out and easy to erect the F10s were. The real
test though was to come at Camp 1 (5000m) and in the case of the
Assault, Camp 2 (6000m). When the weather closed in and we were
all at Camp 1, we had steady winds of 40-50mph (80kph) with gusts
considerably stronger than this. The F10s never moved. During a
lull, two of us moved up to Camp 2 with my Assault. The wind returned
and was even stronger. The general concensus was averageing 60mph+
and gusting up to 80mph (120kph). There was chaos all around us
as mountain tents of all makes were either collapsing or snapping
poles. The F10 Assault was as solid as ever.
My colleague Steve was
so impressed he is going to buy one!
Thanks for a great bit
of kit. Next stop Cho Oyu in September!
Regards.

"This is bivvying
at its ultimate in luxury...high dome configuration of two poles
at the head end create acres of headroom...offers loads more space
than most bivvies. The head end gets a huge (and useful) mesh panel.
There's also a small porch at the head end which has a zip-away
access door.

"The inner and outer
go up as one...and the two door access single porch has enough space
for all your gear and plenty spare to cook in comfort. The inner
tent is a luxury size for two...this is just the sort of size tent
two ackpackers would be very comfortable in."

"Force Ten's pedigree
in expedition tent technology continues with this compact, lightweight
2-person geodesic mountain shelter. Forty year's experience of supplying
tents for use in the harshest environments sees Assault incorporating
a pole support system that has been wind-tunnel rated to extreme
forces. The result is a structure that bends and weaves before snapping
back into shape."
BALTORO
Outdoor

"The self-standing
semi-geodesic design creates a good balance between structural strength
and weight, and DAC Featherlite alloy poles provide an innovative
pole design that also improves the tent's strength-to-weight ratio.
Thoughtful additional
features include a gear loft for equipment storage in the
tent and even a head torch holder. All in all this is a top piece
of kit, which should suit pretty much any camper in any condition."

"... sturdy enough
for year-round British mountain use. Quality of materials is excellent.
The semi-geodesic design gives good
protection against the weather whichever direction it is coming
from. This
sort of robustness doesn't come cheap, but it is worth every penny."

"Good qualiuty materials
are used here throughout. It goes up all in one, but can easily

" Another from the revitalised Force Ten range of tents. Easy
to pitch and stood up to the conditions as well as any. The guys
using it were impressed with the ease of assembly. Excellent pockets
and twin gearlofts made for good storage with front and rear vestibules
giving even more storage and good space for cooking etc. Well thought
out overall."
